How to File IFTA Quarterly Returns as an Owner-Operator
IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) simplifies fuel tax reporting for truckers operating in multiple states. You file one quarterly return with your base state instead of separate returns for each state.
Why IFTA Matters
Without IFTA, you would need a fuel tax permit for every state you operate in and file returns with each one. IFTA consolidates this into one quarterly filing.
Gather Your Mileage Records
Collect your GPS logs or paper trip logs for the quarter. You need miles driven in each IFTA jurisdiction (state/province).
Total Your Fuel Purchases
Gather all fuel receipts. Note the gallons purchased and the state where you bought fuel. You need this per-state.
Calculate Your Fleet MPG
Divide total miles driven by total gallons purchased. This is your overall fleet MPG for the quarter.
File Online with Your Base State
Log in to your base state's IFTA portal. Enter miles per jurisdiction and fuel purchases per state. The system calculates what you owe or are refunded.
